“I got my girls.”
the safety net women build for each other
That one scene in Friends, where Rachel is devastated but says, “I got my girls,” has always stuck with me. This week, I found myself relating to that more than before.
After an unexpected turn of events, I was shaken a bit.
My girls came to the rescue.
They cooked delicious dinners for me. They listened to me run through the same story over and over again. They took me swimming, dancing in the club, and painting by the seaside. They also sat in silence with me. Because, you know, sometimes a girl just needs to stare at the wall for a while.
I felt the “girl joy” I so desperately needed.
Women’s friendships are not exactly easy to build or maintain. They take mutual effort, but they create such a safety net. They’re one of the most rewarding aspects of life I’ve experienced so far, and I’m excited to experience them through the next chapters of life: through my thirties, my forties, and beyond.
Life happens. We move in different directions, and find ourselves in different timelines. We evolve and our lives don’t stay the same.
But somehow, we manage to find a way to stay present in each other’s lives, holding each other’s hands through it all. And I think that’s so beautiful.
I’m pretty confident that no matter what life throws my way, as long as I’ve got my girls, I’ll be fine.
More than fine, I’ll thrive.
So I guess Rachel was right all along.

Rachel was so right!! Thanks for sharing this Aleyna. The circle of women that we keep around us is so important. We may have the same friends through the years, but we are all moving through different seasons and friendships may naturally change. But ultimately you still know who the people are that you want to call when you are excited for something, or when the hard times hit (and everything in between!). I am so glad to hear your tribe rallied around you and lifted you up. What a blessing it is to have these wonderful ladies in our lives 💛
Over the last year, I have paid a lot more attention to which friendships actually nourish me and which ones leave me depleted. The right people really do become part of the safety net that helps us get through life.
